Well received indie film about two orphaned sisters, one of whom, Mary, is a fifteen year old suffering from cystic fibrosis, while the other, Penny, is a twentysomething free spirit. Penny, an erstwhile poet, supports Mary and herself by prostituting herself and seems headed towards disaster until she starts getting letters from a convict (Sweeney) who has read her book of poetry and attracts the attention of a young man who lives around the corner. An intense story about life, death, alienation and the need for human contact, THE BOOK OF STARS is a beautifully filmed and ultimately uplifting meditation on these themes.

In the 12th V. I. Warshawksi mystery, the private detective returns to her old South Chicago neighborhood, a visit littered with unpleasant memories, plus present-day sabotage, murder, and disappearing teenagers. After her former high-school basketball coach becomes ill with cancer, V. I. agrees to volunteer-coach the girls` team. An attempt to drum up corporate support for the team from local high-school alum Buffalo Bill Bysen, the elderly CEO of the By-Smart big-box discount store, proves a dismal failure; ironically, the Bysen family ends up appealing to V. I. instead when Bysen`s great-grandson Billy and one of the basketball team members run off together.

The Wrong One

Times were tough for the Spencer family. After their father died, Kate, Jesse, and their adopted sister, Sookan, had to move with their mother from Brooklyn to a dilapidated farmhouse in western Massachusetts. Everyone except Sookan hated it; she hadn't lived in Brooklyn long enough to miss the house there, but the rest of them hoped the move would be only temporary. But Mrs. Spencer's business is slow to get off the ground, and the repairs to the house are expensive, so finances are tight. Suddenly they're facing the possibility of losing their rundown farmhouse, too.
